MANDATE:

The LEIR operations team is responsible for providing ions for the LHC Ion Physics runs as well as the North Area fixed target experiments.

The LEIR operations team consists of a small team of equipment specialists, accelerator physicists and is assisted by the SPS operations group.

The LEIR accelerator is one of the only accelerators at CERN which can be viewed year round on official visits.

With a circumference of 80 meters, it is one of the smaller circular accelerators currently in use at CERN with a long and varied history in both it's current configuration and in it's previous life.

Whilst mainly dedicated for the LHC Ion physics programme only in the latter stages of the year, the LEIR accelerator is used for machine development studies and Ion physics for both the SPS North Area Fixed Target experiments and the PS East Area Experiments for the rest of its yearly run.
